This review of Vitamix 5200 blender that I’ve written is not just a simple discussion of how the product works, but hopefully a call to action to anyone reading this that has been postponing their resolution to change their cooking and eating habits. A single kitchen equipment could change the course of your health significantly, all you need to do is give it a shot!
Given the chance to go back in time, what are the things that you would tell your younger self if you saw each other? Have you ever come across this question?
As for me, well, here are the things that I would tell my younger self:
- Prioritize your health
- Invest
- Take good care of your teeth
I will talk about investments and my teeth in another post, but right now let’s focus on health. 😀
Now that I’m moving towards middle life, I can’t even stress how I wish I could have taken better care of my health when I was younger. When we were in our teens, or in our 20s, we felt so invincible.
That is until we start to feel those little back pains, the body aches that make their presence felt from time to time. Had I taken care of my physical wellness at a level that I should have way back, I think I wouldn’t be firefighting these tiny symptoms right now.
Being healthy isn’t a goal for just a few days, it’s a lifestyle change. My decision to cook as often as I can for my family (that’s 99% of the time, I think) is fueled by this choice to turn my health around, and keep that of my loved ones in check.
I want to know what goes into our food and into our bodies for nourishment. I want to completely eliminate any chance encounters with GMOs, additives, or any seemingly non-toxic substance that could potentially be harmful to my family in the long run.

The Unboxing Of My Vitamix 5200
When my Vitamix 5200 was delivered to me, I got really excited because of the big box that it was packed with! For those of you who are intimidated by large boxes or packages, don’t be!
Your Vitamix will weigh around 11 pounds, plus the packaging which could vary according to your courier if they add more layers to it. One thing’s for sure, the folks at Vitamix made sure that everything was packed correctly without one component damaging the other.
Your box should arrive fully-sealed like mine (return it right away if the seal is broken!). I just had to use my reliable cutter to slice through the adhesive. I then carefully took out the cover and brought out the parts of my Vitamix 5200 one by one.
The box would be marked “this side up”, but in case you or your courier missed the marking, your blender parts would be slotted into a customized Styrofoam cushion, where each of the components fit snuggly. So, you wouldn’t need to worry about the parts wobbling or suddenly falling out of the box.
In this order, I pulled the tamper out first, followed by the body of my blender, which I inspected for scratches, dents, or cracks. I then took out the motor – which is the bottom part of the Vitamix 5200 system.
I panicked for about a millisecond about the missing power cable, but then immediately realized that the cord was also wound up under the base. It is a long cable, at 6 feet! Even longer than a lot of other brands, which adds to its convenience especially if your power source is quite far from where you would be placing your blender.
For those who are also ordering the package with a dry grain container, it should include its body (smaller than the main body of your blender), plus its own tamper.
The Vitamix 5200 system also comes with a manual and a cookbook with tons of recipes that you can prepare for you and your family. Make sure to report any missing system parts to your dealer or to after-sales as soon as you can.
The Anatomy Of Your Vitamix 5200: Important Features
Like a healthy, able body, your Vitamix has different functionalities that make the magic work. Now that you already have an idea of all the essential parts of your blender, you might want to take a step further and explore the other key design elements it possesses, and how every single one of them functions.

Let’s check out and examine closely the blender’s motor base, its 64-ounce capacity container, and the main control system.
Motor
The motor of your Vitamix 5200 is the heart of it all. This Swedish-built motor base spins the stainless steel blades at over 37,000 rotations per minute! The motor is the blender’s only element that was designed and manufactured in Sweden, while the rest of its components are manufactured in the US.
When you unbox your Vitamix 5200, check where the motor is made, which should only indicate Sweden. If the marker indicates otherwise, then chances are you have purchased a fake product.
Although the motor base is powerful, it can’t work at its fullest potential without a special thermal protection system. This thermal system prevents the motor from capacity overload and from burnout or short-circuiting.
There is also a built-in radial cooling fan that maintains a cool environment for your motor even as you work at high speeds.
Like coffee and cream, your blade and the engineered design make your Vitamix 5200 a lean, mean, blending machine.
Containers
The body of the Vitamix system where everything is processed. Eastern Tritan copolyester containers, which is what comes with your Vitamix 5200 system, are made of BPA-free polypropylene.
These feature improved sound dampening characteristics, as well as a square rubber pad that assists in properly cushioning the container. This aids in the reduction of any vibration that may occur during the blending process.
Each 64-ounce container is equipped with an ergonomic soft-grip handle, which makes pouring both efficient and ergonomic. It is the revolutionary easy-off two-part vented lids of the Vitamix containers (plus the removable twist-off lid plugs) that allow you to effortlessly add ingredients during the blending process without spilling any liquid.
The Control System
Consider this the brain of your Vitamix system. In order to control the motor speed, a variable speed turn dial plus a set of switches are used. It does not include pre-programmed settings or a touchpad, which distinguishes it from many other high-performance models currently available on the market.
The switches are made of a long-lasting soft-touch rubber that is both comfortable and effective to operate. There are buttons to switch the machine on and off, as well as a speed control button. The varied speeds may be controlled by rotating the middle dial.
Making a smoothie or making soup is no different than processing anything else, so start with a slow speed and work your way up.
You should gradually increase the pace once it has begun to run in order to achieve the consistency you require. Because it does not switch off automatically, it is important to keep an eye on your blender as it operates.
What Are The Pros?
Getting the 5200 is not just any other purchase, it’s a life-changing investment.
- You can get a whole food meal in under a minute
It’s highly flexible and versatile. As mentioned above, it can make a plethora of things, including soups. Not to mention frozen desserts, smoothies, and cocktails. Every time your sweet tooth craves ice cream, just toss some frozen fruit and berries, add a little bit of water and ice (optional), and process for a minute. Voila! A tasty and antioxidant-packed sorbet is ready!
- It can break through tough stems, seeds, and skins
If you’ve ever made a smoothie in a bargain blender, you know that it’s hard to process the seeds and skin. The Vitamix 5200 blender effortlessly processes basically everything so you get a smooth and chunk-free smoothie in seconds.
The same goes for hard to process vegetables and nuts. Just throw in pumpkin seeds, whole kale, spinach, and carrot in the container and process for 30 to 60 seconds, depending on the consistency you need.
- It’s easy to clean
It’s worth mentioning that this machine cleans itself with a breeze. This is the perfect option for busy moms who have no time for handwashing. Keep in mind that it is not dishwasher safe.
If you need to clean the machine, just mix some water with a little bit of dishwashing detergent and put the machine on high for at least 30 seconds. If the machine is too dirty, leave it clean for a minute.
- There are thousands of Vitamix recipes online
If you do a quick Google research, you’ll find even more. As one of the most sold blenders in the US and worldwide, the 5200 has become increasingly popular among top chefs and celebrities. Customers share their own ideas as well, especially on Pinterest, so you won’t have trouble using this in your daily kitchen routine.
- It’s easy to operate
The Vitamix 5200 blender has no fancy-schmancy display or dozens of confusing buttons, making it very easy to use. Minimal food preparation required, so it works best even for our grandmas and grandpas with limited hand muscle movement. All you have to do is choose the speed from 1 to 10 for a specific ingredient and get blending!
- Excellent customer support and a generous warranty
All the Vitamix models, are made in the United States. At least 70% of the machine parts are made in the United States too. Not only they are durable and powerful blenders, but they also have generous 7 to 10-year warranties.
Not to mention that their customer support is well-developed and is easy to reach. If your blender breaks down, you can have it replaced or repaired at no charge at all.
- It comes with a tamper tool
There are times when large chunks of frozen fruit or veggies get stuck in the stainless steel blades while you’re blending them. Fortunately, the 5200 comes with a tamper tool that you can use to push or move the contents around when this happens.
The tamper tool is collared and perfectly sized, it’s just long enough to mix your ingredients from the lid so it doesn’t get damaged by the sharp blades at the bottom of the jug.
What Are the Cons?
- Fixed blades
Even with the special spatulas provided to get in between those dangerously sharp stainless steel blades, getting out all the tiny stubborn food pieces can still cause a little cleaning hassle.
- Size
Customers complain about having trouble fitting the 5200 under their kitchen counters. I find it best to store the container and the base separately so that they’ll fit in my cupboard.
The good thing is, it looks modern and sophisticated, so I don’t mind putting it on display on my countertop too. And let’s be honest, who doesn’t want to brag about having countertop blenders like a Vitamix blender at home?
- High Speed Control
For your motor to last longer, it’s best to learn how to use it correctly. Running the blender at a slow or high speed for a long period will your blender’s motor to the bone. Make sure you are watching the DVD or reading the package included instructions to know how to vary the speeds.
- Noise
As our friendly neighborhood superhero likes to say, “with great power comes great responsibility”. On that note, the 5200 has a powerful motor, thus it has a higher level of noise than regular blenders.
The truth is, all high-performance blenders are noisy regardless of their price. After all, how often do you make smoothies at midnight?
Tips And Tricks: Using Your Vitamix 5200 To Its Full Blending Potential
- Maximize that horsepower! Fun fact: When your blender is working at high speed, the motor remains cool as a result of the fan being cranked up to its maximum capacity. Blending at high speed actually helps to keep your machine from overheating.
Needless to say, don’t be intimidated by the high-powered and loud operation of your Vitamix machine. When you immediately boost the speed to a high setting, everything gets blended in seconds. Always start on the lowest setting, and then turn the dial up fast.
Imagine this: blending for an excessive amount of time at a low speed will overheat your machine, causing the “Automatic Overload Protection” to shut down the unit automatically. - Know when to use the wet or the dry container. What’s the difference between the two, anyway?
To keep things short, you don’t want to use the wrong tool for the job, like a saw for slicing butter and a knife to cut through wood. Use wet for wet, and dry for dry, and I promise you that you won’t run into any trouble with your Vitamix! - Whenever possible, pour in liquids first, followed by solid (but not too hard) items such as cut fruits or vegetables, and finally load the container with the hardest items such as ice or frozen ingredients.
Your container’s loading sequence is more significant than you might think. The weight of the frozen goods on top will serve as a sort of internal “tamper”, which takes care of pushing the other components towards the blades, resulting in an even smoother blend.
Placing the liquids at the bottom of your Vitamix container ensures that there are no spaces that will potentially slow down both the motor and the blades, as your machine struggles to get a hold of the ingredients due to spaces or air pockets. - Don’t hesitate to use those tampers (and no, they would not get crushed by the blades). When it comes to blending dense materials, the tamper can be your true best friend. The tamper can assist in re-circulating the ingredients and preventing air pockets from accumulating around the blades of the blender.
Always keep in mind that you should fill your container at maximum two-thirds to be able to efficiently use the tampers. Another important thing is to keep the lid on the blender when using a tamper, so that it never touches the blades of the blender. - Did you know that the lid plug of your Vitamix also doubles as a measuring cup? This is particularly useful when preparing a recipe with exact measurements of its liquid ingredients, or when you need to water down a mix by adding increments of liquid.
In case this is your first time to learn about this, check you lid plug the next time you replace your tamper. You’ll be happy to see that you need not pull out (and wash!) an extra measuring cup. - Quantity is power! While there is a line that sets the limit on the maximum amount of ingredients to place in your Vitamix container, you cannot do with too little, either!
In order for the Vitamix to function correctly, it requires a bare minimum of ingredients in the container. Using too little ingredients will result in splattering, with not enough ingredients and volume for the blades to handle.
What Sets The Vitamix 5200 Apart From The Rest
What is it about the 5200 that has kept it around for so long? Particularly in light of the fact that other previous Vitamix units have already been phased out, and yet here the 5200 still stands?
It’s most likely because it’s extremely popular with the public for several reasons. When you say Vitamix, it is almost automatically attached to “5200”.
The fact that Vitamix continued its manufacturing and marketing for a target group of consumers was also a contributing factor. Anyone who is new to blending who want the complete Vitamix experience, without all of the functionalities or advanced features that much newer models offer, will have a great time warming up to the 5200.
When it originally came out, it was capable of feats that no kitchen guru has ever witnessed before. Do you want to throw whole fruits and veggies into your Vitamix 5200, and watch them get pulverized in seconds? Is it possible for the blades to spin so quickly, that you could make hot soups without using an oven or microwave?
Now, these are the features that Vitamix is known for, and they were already revolutionary at the time.
Maybe one answer can top it all: It’s simply a great legacy! The product has made its mark in the market and in the hearts of consumers, which could be the very reason that people still continue to demand for it, and to purchase it.
Some have speculated that the build quality of the previous machines was superior, and that the newer machines have taken shortcuts that impair longevity while allowing for a bigger set of features.
As if everything I’ve mentioned wasn’t enough, the Vitamix 5200 offers the most complete “starter pack” . With the 5200, unlike any other Vitamix product, you’ll get a cookbook, as well as a tutorial DVD that includes demos on how to make the best out of your Vitamix.
What Are The Things You Can Make With Vitamix 5200?

FAQs
Why Is The Vitamix 5200 Blender So Heavy?
The lightweight models of blenders are seemingly better to use. However, the lighter your blender is, the shorter lifespan it might have and the higher chance for it to stumble when you turn around and leave it blending.
It weighs around 11 pounds. This indicates that the machine has the power and strength that will serve you for about 10 years or more.
Can Vitamix 5200 Replace A Juicer?
While you can make juices in it, they will be a little chunkier. You must strain the mixture to get rid of the pulp.
What’s The Correct Way To Use Vitamix 5200?
While the getting started instruction is a useful thing, still many people may get confused using it. Keep reading to figure out how to use this high-performance blender correctly.
- First, get familiar with the functions of the two levers and the speed dial at the center interface panel of the base. Use the lever to the right of the dial to power the blender on and off. The lever to the left of the turn dial features the two-speed settings.
Just like mentioned before, it’s recommended to start processing the ingredients on Low then eventually increase the speed to high speed.
- You can always use the rotating dial at the center of the blender’s interface to choose the speed. That interface panel has 1 to 10 numbers, where “1” means the lowest speed and “10” means the highest speed. The speed level highly depends on the ingredients you’re going to process and the consistency you want your mixture to have.
- Apart from using the control system correctly, it’s critical to load the ingredients into the container in the right way. Start with placing the softest ingredients, then liquid ones, and solid or frozen on the top. Not only will this order boost the blending result but it will also reduce your processing time.
- If you’re going to try the dishes from the cookbooks included in the packages, pay attention to the order of the ingredient lists. They are in the order you should load them. If you learn to load the ingredients correctly, you won’t need to stop the blender in the middle of the process and use the tamper to mix the ingredients.
- If you want to reach the finely diced results, start blending on the lowest speed with an empty container and then step by step add in the ingredients. This process works particularly great for very solid foods.
Does Vitamix 5200 Feature A Traditional “Pulse” Function?
Unlike other blenders, the 5200 doesn’t have a pulse option. Simply switch the blender to the first setting (Speed number 1) and quickly shut it back off. It’s easy to get used to such a method and you won’t notice that there’s no “pulsing” option.
Cleaning Hacks For Your Vitamix 5200
It might seem intuitive… and, well, in fact it is! Cleaning your Vitamix 5200 container is rather easy. Just take note of a few maintenance tips below.
- For basic maintenance, just pour warm water into the container halfway, along with a little vinegar. After that, turn it up at high speed for 30-45 seconds. If your machine has a cleaning cycle, you can also use that button to start the cleaning cycle.
- You may also have noticed that the side walls of your Vitamix container have turned murky over time. The most effective strategy to avoid this is to thoroughly clean the container after each use and to avoid allowing residue to accumulate in the container. A “foggy” container, on the other hand, is frequently caused by the blending of spices, mixing mineral-rich components, or using hard water.
- You can easily address this issue by filling half of the container with a mixture of one cup of white vinegar plus warm water. Let it sit for 12-16 hours. After thoroughly soaking your container, empty the contents and clean using a scrubber to remove any lingering marks or residue.
For minute scratches, however, I won’t be able to provide any remedy. Unless someone here knows how to address scratches, please let us know in the comments, that would be of great help! If you really need to blend hard or rough ingredients, you might want to consider purchasing another container, so you can totally separate blending the smooth from the rough ingredients.
Is Vitamix 5200 Worth It?
It definitely is! The system is made of high-quality and durable materials that can last you for YEARS. That is of course aside from the fact that it is one powerful blender with which you can prepare a lot of healthy beverages and meals.
Does Vitamix Still Make The 5200?
Yes, they still do. It is (still) currently one of the top-selling models of Vitamix.
What Is The Best Vitamix Model?
I would personally recommend the 5200, as it has already been tried and tested when we speak of efficiency, versatility, and durability. You can come across folks who’ve owned one for years already, and would still vouch for it.
What’s The Difference Between Vitamix 5200 And Other Blenders?
So here I’ve compiled a comprehensive comparison of Vitamix with other blenders. We’ll take a look at the differences in features, built, power, and everything else you need to know before buying your Vitamix 5200.
Vitamix 5200 vs. Vitamix 7500
The appearance is the most apparent difference between the two Vitamix blenders. While the 7500 is wider and shorter, the 5200 is thin and tall.
- Variable Speed Control: Ten variable speeds allow you to refine every texture with culinary precision, from the smoothest...
- Pulse Feature: Layer coarse chops over smooth purées for heartier recipes, such as chunky salsas or thick vegetable soups.
- Low-Profile 64-ounce Container: Perfect for family meals and entertaining, while fitting comfortably under most kitchen...
Last update on 2024-11-20 / Affiliate links / Images from Amazon Product Advertising API
This width difference in the container of the 7500 leaves more room for the blade, which is why the blade in this model is a one-inch diameter bigger than the 5200. This gives better blending results, however, the noise level of the Vitamix 7500 is also much higher than of the 5200.
Another reason is that the Vitamix 7500 has a bit more strong motor base. It has an additional .2 horsepower to an already efficient 2 peak horsepower motor. It doesn’t sound like a lot, yet if you’re trying to blend the tough mixtures like hummus or nut butter, then the difference is highly visible.
Finally, the price is of the 7500 is much higher than that of the 5200 due to its enhanced features.

Vitamix 5200 vs. Vitamix 5300
Since the two models share a lot of similar features, you can easily mistake one for the other. Both 5200 and 5300 feature variable speed controls and both allow you to rotate the dial. Another similarity is that they both have a 64 ounce container. The difference lies in the motor and design, though.

The Vitamix 5300 has a slightly more powerful high-performance motor than the 5200. This means that you can blend the same ingredients a little faster in the Vitamix 5300 as compared to the 5200. The design of the Vitamix 5300 is a little bit different too. It’s compact and not as tall as the 5200. This saves you a little bit of counter space, but this can also be a problem if you blend in bigger batches.
It also comes at a higher price than the 5200 model.
Vitamix 5200 vs. Vitamix 300
Being subsequent to the 5200, the professional series 300 model seems to have a more beefed up motor. The thing is, the Vitamix 300 is created to handle more demanding blending requirements while the 5200 model helps to handle moderate blending needs.

Another difference is their controls, unlike the 5200, the 300 model has the “pulse” option, giving you more control when processing the bigger chunks of ingredients. However, the 5200 has an On/Off switch on its base, something the 300 model doesn’t have. Both models feature BPA-free 64 ounce containers and the same additional accessories. Additionally, they both also feature a 10 variable speed control that lets you choose the consistency and texture you want.
Vitamix 5200 vs. Vitamix 500
Two major distinctions of the 500 model are the “pulse” option and the 3 pre-programmed settings that provide accuracy. The 5200 doesn’t have these features, but you still can control the speed of blending thanks to the easy control system and they both have 10-speed dials.

The Vitamix 500 also features the same spill-proof lid as the 5200 that helps to prevent any content wastage, keeping your countertop clean and clear. Their lid has a removable plug, allowing you to add the ingredients to the blender during the blending process.
Another difference between the two models is that while the 5200 has a Whole Food Recipe book helping you introduce whole foods into your diet, the 500 has a Create Recipes book that leans more towards gourmet food made by professional chefs.
Vitamix 5200 vs. Vitamix 6000
The Vitamix 6000 features 6 optimized settings and the “pulse” option in comparison to the high-low setting of the 5200 model. An added feature to the 6000 model is that it automatically turns off when the ingredients are mixed and combined. You don’t have to wait for the blender to finish its job so that you could manually switch it off.
The 6000 model also includes a flip-top beverage bottle that allows you to take your green smoothie with you. However, the 5200 model features packages that include a dry grain container and a compact 32-ounce container.
Both models have powerful 2 peak horsepower motors and 64-ounce BPA-free containers. They also have the Vitamix signature spill-proof vented lid, preventing the waste and retaining all the contents even if it’s full of that healthy smoothie goodness.
Vitamix 5200 vs. Vitamix Pro 200
One of their major differences is the motor. Since the Vitamix 200 is of the Pro series, it has a commercial-grade 2+ peak horsepower, but this also means it generates a louder noise compared to the 5200.
- Commercial-grade 2+ Peak Horsepower Motor

They both have 10-speed options, however, the Vitamix Pro 200 has the pulse option too like the other Pro series models. In general, the 5200 is proven to be more versatile than the Vitamix Pro 200.
Vitamix 5200 vs. Vitamix 750
Designed for professional use in cafes and bars, the Vitamix 750 is in a higher price range than the 5200 model. And of course, it comes with a lot of tricks on its sleeve.

Second, the Vitamix 750 features a preset setting that allows you to turn the machine on and it turns off automatically once the blend has met your required consistency. Third, it has a powerful 2.2 horsepower motor while the 5200 model has 2 horsepower motor. Moreover, the 750 model has pulse control in addition to the 10-speed dial that they both have.
If you’re going to purchase a Vitamix blender for standard home use, it’s best to go with the Vitamix 5200. It has almost the same motor strength and the same BPA-free container, so unless you plan on using the 750 for business, why pay more?
Vitamix 5200 vs. Vitamix 6300

Although the Vitamix 5200 blender lacks these functions it doesn’t mean it’s worse than the Blendtec Total model. It does its job exceptionally well and is highly durable for its price point. Plus, it’s super easy to use and clean.

It’s easy to fit in and store away in the small kitchen. Both models have powerful motors that allow blending almost all ingredients for cooking.
Unlike the Vitamix 5200 blender, though, the Nutribullet model has the hands-free SMART technology for easier operation. It also features a heating cycle for sauces and soups.
It is also quieter when blending since it only has 1700 watts of motor power compared to the Vitamix’s 2 peak horsepower motor. This makes it less convenient if you make smoothies for more than 2 persons since it also has a smaller container that’s only perfect for travel-sized mugs.

But with the Ninja 1200, you have to stop the blender and take the lid off if you want to add another ingredient, unlike with the Vitamix 5200 where you can just take out the tamper tool if you want to add anything to the mixture.
Moreover, the blender has square sides so food can often get trapped in the corners during the blending process. To avoid this problem, you just need to add more liquid, especially if the ingredients are very soft.
In summary, it still all boils down to what you need the blender for and how much your target budget is. If it’s for regular home consumption, I strongly suggest going with the Vitamix 5200 blender. It’s highly durable and can last you for years and get your money’s worth. It’s simple to use and very efficient too.
