When it comes to the best-insulated coffee mugs, Contigo and Yeti are two of the brands that would come to mind. Their features frequently get compared and we’re all left wondering is Yeti better than Contigo? These well-established brands have been making quality coffee travel mugs for years and are greatly appreciated by travelers and coffee lovers alike.
So, I figured today – we’ll try to settle the score and see which one is better than the other. We’ll put one of each brand’s most popular products under the microscope and check all the factors that make a good coffee mug. On top of the list is of course, how long can they keep my coffee warm? That’s the main reason we get insulated coffee mugs after all.
What Makes The Insulated Best Coffee Mug?
- Capacity – How much coffee can it hold? I prefer mine to be able to hold at least 2 regular cups of coffee at a time. So preferably a coffee mug that has a 16-ounce capacity will be good. But if you love coffee and hate having to do multiple trips to the coffee machine, might as well get something bigger.
- Durability – When you invest in a high-quality coffee mug, you expect it to last for years. Therefore, you want to make sure that it has a durable construction. You don’t want it to break or crack if you accidentally drop it or knock it off.
- Insulation – The whole point of getting an insulated coffee mug is so that it can keep your coffee warm for at least a couple of hours while you go on your daily tasks. For this, I find stainless steel mugs to work the best, specifically vacuum-insulated ones.
- Cleaning – Another reason to stick with stainless steel mugs, they’re easier to clean. They are usually stain and odor resistant which makes them easier to clean. It’s also good to have a mug that has a wider lip to where you can put a bottle brush or a sponge to clean the inside.

So here we’re getting a closer look two of their best-selling insulated mug models to see which one is better: the Yeti Rambler or the Contigo West Loop.
Capacity & Size
Both mugs have a 20 oz. capacity. However, Contigo West Loop is also available in 16 oz. and 24 oz mugs. They both weigh around 0.8 pounds too, which is just the right weight as coffee mugs go. Both models fit in cup holders in cars, though Yeti is more stable because it is stouter while Contigo is slender and can be too tall for cup holders.
Winner: Contigo West Loop
Durability
The Yeti Rambler and the Contigo West Loop are both made from Stainless Steel. Yeti Rambler is made with 18/8 kitchen-grade stainless steel. This means it is durable and will not easily dent, break, or rust, considering that Yeti products are made for outdoor use. The Contigo West Loop on the other hand is made to be travel friendly so it offers great durability.
Winner: Yeti
Insulation
The most important thing about an insulated coffee mug, is how well and how long it keeps your coffee hot. Yeti nailed it down with double-wall vacuum insulation on the Rambler. This effectively keeps your drink steaming hot for hours. Contigo has the same double-wall insulation plus an auto-seal lid that helps it keep your drink hot for up to 6 hours. This also keeps it from spilling coffee all over the place.
Winner: Yeti
Cleaning
Both models are made from stainless steel, this makes them more hygienic as it is easier to clean and odor resistant. However, I find Yeti easier to clean as it has a wider opening than the Contigo. Plus, the Auto seal lid can be quite hard to clean.
