Most people claim that cooking chips in a halogen oven is just a waste of time, food, and therefore money. It’s partially true, but there are tricks that will show you how to make the crispiest chips possible in a halogen oven.[no_toc]

Don’t rush into investing in an air fryer. Halogen ovens are ideal for cooking chips, despite all the myths. Check out some of the easiest ways to cook chips, including frozen ones, in your halogen oven.

1. The low to high-temperature method (No parboiling required)

One of the biggest problems halogen oven users face when making homemade chips is that the potato pieces are typically cooked outside and stay raw inside. You can prevent this problem by “playing” a bit with temperatures.

Use a chip cutter to cut your potatoes into even pieces. Coat them in olive or sunflower oil. Place the chips on the rack in your halogen oven. Set the temperature to 300F and cook until your chips are nearly soft. Now set the temperature to 392F and cook until soft and golden brown. The downside of these chips is that they contain too much fats since the low temperature allows the oil to seep into the chips.

2. The classic method

The classic method of making the chips requires parboiling and lots of your attention. The result is worth it, though. Parboil the potato slices and drain them. Pat them dry with a paper towel, spray with the oil of your choice, and then put them into your halogen oven. Set the time and temperature according to your oven’s instructions and recommendations.

3. Frozen chips

If you buy the frozen chips, you can cook them in a halogen oven too. All you should do is just toss them into the oven and cook at the fan oven temperature according to the time mentioned on the package.

4. The high temperature method

This method allows you to prevent the oil seeping into the chips, making them healthier and crispier. Use a chip cutter to cut the potatoes. Coat the chips with a tiny bit of the oil of your choice. Place into your halogen oven flat with little spaces between them and cook for about 13 minutes at 392F. If your chips are still hard to eat, consider cooking a few more minutes at a lower temperature (see the method #1).

5. Cooking with an air fryer attachment

The latest halogen oven models allow using several attachments, including the air fryer one. The cooking process is pretty much the same like that of the classic method, but the chips are supposed to be crispier. Look for stainless steel air fryer attachment so that it could serve you for years.

You don’t need to invest in an air fryer or spend heaps of money on fat-loaded, store bought chips. With a little bit of experimentation, you’ll learn how to make the healthier potato chips in a halogen oven fast. If you’re watching your calorie intake, feel free to skip using the oils at all. Use fresh or dry herbs as a seasoning.
