One of the main struggles when making breakfast smoothie bowls is when they come out too thin to pick up with a spoon. So, the million-dollar question is: how do you thicken a smoothie bowl? The most frequent cause of this is either you added too much liquid or adding a lot of ice to your mixture.

A smoothie bowl saves us a lot of time from preparing a full breakfast spread just to get all our needed nutrients for the day. The whole process should only take you about 10 minutes, often less if you already have your fruits prepared. Then you blend it into a froyo-like consistency and decorate with your favorite toppings.

It’s a fun way to start your mornings! My kids love picking their own fruits and toppings. They enjoy decorating their own bowls which make breakfasts, tantrum-free. There’s also a sense of pride that they are eating a lot of fruits! I find that they also tend to ask for fewer snacks since we started smoothie/smoothie bowls. It’s really a win-win situation! If you have toddlers or just started the weaning journey, please buy a blender that would be the best blender for pureeing to ensure you make the best smoothie bowls and perfect baby food in town. Here’s A Quick Recipe On How To Make Acai Bowls From Your Own Home:

  • Freeze the fruits. Get your choice of fruits and freeze them overnight.  Make sure to peel and chop the fruits into smaller blender-friendly pieces before freezing them.
  • Get your toppings ready. Take out the nuts, seeds, and other superfoods that you’re planning to add on your acai bowl. Chop the fruits and let them chill in the fridge while you’re making the smoothie.
  • Blend the Açai. Take the frozen Açai puree and break them into smaller chunks. Then toss them into the blender until it’s slightly smooth. Add the frozen fruit slices and your liquid base. Let it blend until you get your preferred consistency.
  • Assemble your Açai bowl. Pour the smoothie into your serving bowl. Top with your choice of toppings. Make it artsy! Mix different colored fruits and superfoods to make it perfect for your IG-feed goals 12 Serve immediately.

Here Are My Favorite Tips And Tricks To Making A Thick Smoothie Bowl:

Invest In A Quality Blender.

Making a smoothie bowl involves a lot of crushing frozen fruits, crunchy greens, ice, and sometimes even nuts. Thus, you need a sturdy blender that can properly process these into a creamy smoothie. Check out my article about the Best Blender for Smoothies to find out our trusted blenders that can whip you up a silky smoothie in no time!

Always Use Frozen Fruits.

This disregards the need for ice which eventually waters down your smoothies. They also help in making your smoothies extra thick and creamy. Not to mention this saves you money and many trips to the store. You can buy a week’s worth of fruits, freeze them and just take one out whenever needed.

If you follow the proper fruit freezing process, they can even last in your freezer for up to 6 months! Some fruits that are freezer-friendly are bananas, berries, pineapples, peaches, and mango. You can pack them individually and plan out your smoothies for the week to save more time!

Process Your Greens First.

This is one of the rookie mistakes we tend to make when making smoothies. Always process your greens first with the liquid base you chose. This allows them to have enough room to blend completely. It makes your smoothie thicker and keeps it from having leafy chunks.

Make sure to also follow the recipe’s recommended amount of greens. As healthy as these greens are, you need to balance your ingredients.

Add Grains And Seeds.

Not only do they make your smoothie healthier, adding some grains and seeds to your smoothie mix will also help give it a better texture and consistency. My top choice would be instant oats. I add about half a cup of instant oats in my smoothie when I feel like it’s too thin. It not only adds volume, but it also contributes added fiber and protein!

Another one of my personal fave thickeners would be chia seeds. These itty-bitty seeds of healthy fats help a lot in making your smoothie thicker. They quickly absorb liquid in about 3 to 5 minutes. By then the seeds will start to expand, thus improving the consistency of the smoothie.

I hope this helps resolve your watery smoothie dilemmas! We all deserve a creamy and lick-off-the-spoon thick smoothie bowl in our lives.
